My Visit To
Poland

October 4, 1999: Warsaw
Adam Czerniakow House 1600x1200 (406 KB)

This is the house where Adam Czerniakow, chairman of the Warsaw Judenrat (Jewish Community), lived. Rather than cooperate with the mass deportations that began on July 22, 1942, Czerniakow committed suicide (by poison) the next day. He is reported to have left a note that said, "They are demanding that I kill the children of my people with my own hands. There is nothing for me to do but die."
