The renowned scientist who became known to the world as Marie Curie was born Maria Sklodowska in this house in New Town in 1867. The house now contains a small museum with various exhibits that document her life and work.

Best known for discovering radioactivity with her husband Pierre, Maria Sklodowska-Curie (as she is known to the Poles) was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics in 1903, the first woman to receive that prestigious award. Eight years later, she was awarded the Nobel Prize for chemistry as well.
